Creating Your Own Embroidered Table Runner by Hand
Creating your own embroidered table runner by hand is inexpensive and very easy to do. You will need the following materials: muslin, embroidery design, lace, hand needles, matching sewing thread, embroidery floss, straight pins, hem guage, and spray starch, thimble, and scissors.
1. Wash, dry, and iron your material, then cut it the desired size. Turn the edges toward the back and tack them down. This will keep them from unraveling while you are working.
2. Transfer and work your design on both ends of the runner.
4. Once you are done, press the runner again. With the wrong side up, turn the edges under 1/8". Press this down and repeat.
5. Pin lace to the right side of the material. At the corners fold the lace back on itself to create the corner and pin.
6. Sew through all thicknesses close to the bottom edge of the hem you created. Take care to tack the corners.
7. Now that you are finished you need to wash it again. This time when you press it, you might want to add starch to give it some stiffness.
This technique can be used with placemats, napkins, even handkerchiefs.
